GLEN AVON PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

(GAPW)

  • The purpose of Glen Avon Presbyterian Women:
Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ by
The Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves:
To nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,
To support the mission of the church worldwide,
To work for justice and peace, and
To build an inclusive, caring community of women
That strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) and
Witnesses to the promise of God’s Kingdom.

GAPW women meet monthly in Circles, for Bible study, prayer and fellowship.
This year’s study is "Journeys through Revelation: Apocalyptic Hope for Today"

    • Miriam Circle meets the first Wed. of each month at 9:00 a.m. in Fireside Room.

    • Naomi Circle meets the first Wed. of each month at 12:00 noon in the Fireside Room. (bring your lunch)

    • Ruth Circle meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room

    • Can’t attend a monthly meeting but wish you could keep in touch with GAPW activities? We have a monthly newsletter sent by email for all Glen Avon women whether or not you are able to attend Circle meetings. It includes the same news you’d hear in a Circle meeting: notes on our monthly Bible study, mission opportunities, and news of GAPW activities. If you’d like to receive these emails, contact Linda Stone in the church office (glenavon@clearwire.net)

Interested in joining a Circle? Talk to GAPW Board members Jan Simmons, Jan Morris, Bonnie Schilling, Mary Gemuenden, Evonne Geer, Mildred Kallio, or Jo Robb.

The 2013 Gathering opens with dinner on Wednesday, June 12, and runs through a plenary session Saturday, June 15. Several have expressed interest in carpooling to this year’s Synod Gathering. If you are interested, please contact Barbara Coyle, Jan Simmons or Claudia Scott Welty. MISSION OF THE MONTH: May

Mission of the Month for May is Bethany Crisis Nursery. Parents need support to be effective caregivers and provide a safe and nurturing environment for children to grow into healthy adults. Parents or guardians who are dealing with emergencies or crises such as sudden illness, housing problems, divorce or separation, or financial strains, may need time alone to resolve the crisis. A child's parent or legal guardian can request emergency day and night care for up to three days by calling the Bethany Crisis Nursery in Duluth. Their trained staff can also provide referrals, counseling and support, as well as supplies in emergency situations. Children from 0–12 years of age are eligible for Crisis Nursery care.

The following items are frequently needed at the Crisis Nursery:

  • Diapers - sizes 4, 5 & 6

  • Baby hygiene items

  • Wipes

  • Diaper ointment

  • Other essential baby items.

They can be dropped off in the tub in the Narthex.

You can also support vulnerable children and their families by becoming an emergency care provider (licensed childcare providers), volunteering at the Crisis Nursery, or by making a financial contribution. Your generous gift of $30 supports one day of safe and supportive emergency child care for a family experiencing crisis. Checks can be made to Glen Avon Presbyterian Church with Bethany Crisis Shelter in the Memo line.

We were very generous with our March Mission of the Month. Several hundred dollars were donated to the CHUM food shelf to meet the challenge match provided by Minnesota Food Share. We also delivered 150 pounds of food.

“…for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. …Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these you did it to me.” Matt 25:35-40
