I recently spoke to my closest friend from seminary days, Cliff Foster. Cliff suggested that a course we needed in seminary was one dealing with the local “fallout” when our national governing body—the General Assembly—takes positions unpopular with many in the church. The issue I’m addressing here is the recent decision of the General Assembly to withdraw our investments (that is, to “divest”) from three corporations with business interests in Israel and the Palestinian territories: Caterpillar, Hewlett-Packard, and Motorola.
